Term Definition
F1 hybrid

The first generation derived from crossing 2 distinct plants, usually when the parents are pure-bred lines and the offspring are vigorous. Seed from F1 hybrids does not come true.

F1 Hybrids

Cultivars resulting from a cross between two different true breeding (referred to as inbred) parents.

Falcate

Fall

An outer perianth segment of and iris, which projects outward or downward from the inner segments.

Fallow

Previously cultivated land kept free from crops or weeds during at least one growing season.

Fan Palm

A palm with palmate rather than pinnate leaves.

Fertilize

To fertilize a flower apply pollen (the male element) to the flower's pistil (the female element) for the purpose of setting seed. To fertilize a plant apply nutrients (plant food, usually referred to as fertilizer).

The formation or development of a fruiting body

A gas or volatile substance that is used to disinfest certain areas of various pests.
